Vanderbilt is at the center of an epidemic of cancers caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. These HPV-associated cancers are potentially preventable and include cancers of the head and neck, lower reproductive tract (cervix, vagina, vulva, penis), and anus. Vanderbilt is well poised to address critical gaps in prevention and early detection strategies that could significantly reduce the number of individuals who are diagnosed with or succumb to these cancers. We will develop supportive infrastructure and educational programs that engage an interdisciplinary team of investigators from the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Biomedical Engineering, and Education as well as Vanderbilt students to lay the groundwork for a consortium focused on HPV-associated cancers. Faculty and students will conduct pilot projects designed to: 1) characterize the burden of HPV-associated cancers seen at Vanderbilt; 2) improve HPV vaccination rates in Tennessee; and 3) develop innovative early detection strategies for HPV-associated head and neck cancer.
