Presentation Title | Signals in the Islet Microenvironment Modulated by Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A Promote Beta Cell Proliferation |
Status | This meeting has already occurred |
Summary: Overexpressing vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A) in mature beta cells leads to endothelial cell expansion and beta cell loss followed by a transient, but robust increase in beta cell proliferation. This proliferation occurs in response to signals derived from the local islet microenvironment composed of endocrine cells, endothelial cells, and macrophages recruited to islets upon VEGF-A overexpression.
