A central mission of the Vanderbilt Diabetes Centerand the Vanderbilt DRTC is training the next generation of scientists and physicians who will improve the lives of patients with diabetes. Each year the Vanderbilt Diabetes Center presents the Vanderbilt Scholar in Diabetes Award to recognize a graduate student and a postdoctoral fellow based on his/her diabetes-related research at Vanderbilt.

In the graduate student category, the 2009 Vanderbilt Scholar in Diabetes is Bonnie Surmi, who just completed her Ph.D. in the laboratory of Dr. Alyssa Hasty in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics.
In the Ph.D. post-doctoral fellow category, the 2009 Vanderbilt Scholar in Diabetes is Richard Benninger. Richard, working with Dr. David Piston in the Department of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, studies the molecular and cellular events of insulin secretion.
In the M.D. post-doctoral fellow category, the 2009 Vanderbilt Scholar in Diabetes is Dan Moore. Dan, working with Dr. Jacek Hawiger in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, studies the inflammatory and immune processes involved in Type 1 diabetes.
