In the face of high demand for insulin production, pancreatic ß-cells are prone to chronic proteotoxic stress, which is triggered by the appearance of non-native and damaged proteins and can lead to defective insulin secretion and diabetes. Heat shock protein 90 isoforms are key regulators of stress response pathways and normal cellular proteostasis. In this talk I discuss the experiments designed to investigate the molecular mechanisms by which Hsp90 chaperone machinery is involved in modulating ß-cell insulin secretion.
