The development of new therapies for diabetes (type 1 and type 2) would be greatly enhanced by a renewable source of human islets for disease modeling and drug screening. Recent advances in the development of protocols for the differentiation of stem cells to endocrine cells hold promise for the development of stem cell derived islets. Advances in differentiation toward stem cell-derived alpha and beta cells and progress toward engineering islets from these cell will be presented.
