Recent observations about the pancreas from individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) have challenged the concept of complete beta cell destruction. To better understand the molecular changes associated with T1D, we have been studying the pancreas and islets of T1D individuals with varying disease duration. This presentation will discuss comprehensive studies of pancreatic tissue and islets from T1D donors (n=8; 12-58y of age, 2-31yrs duration) compared to non-diabetic controls. Our results indicate normal beta cells persist and suggest a new explanation for the disordered glucagon response seen in T1D.
