The Kendall Lab has identified islet-invading immune cells that
express a protein
previously best known for its role in fibrosis and cancer. We have determined the
cellular and molecular role of this protein in promoting type 1 diabetes, and have found that targeting it can prevent autoimmune disease without leading to immunodeficiency.
