All animals are acclimatized (> 5 days) to the facility and individual housing in a cage containing a specialized feeding station. Feeding stations allow the animals to eat but are designed to minimize spillage. 24h food consumption is assessed manually by weighing the food daily at the same time for a minimum of 4 days; average 24h consumption calculated. We have found that for 24h food consumption, data are consistent and reproducible in a given mouse and are sensitive enough to detect a 15% difference. The manual approach compares favorably to results obtained using an automated feeding system that continually measures feeding behavior. We also have the Promethion system that also measures energy expenditure continual monitors food intake for users interested in feeding behavior including meal-patterning. We can also test conditioned taste aversion and food preference.
