CDTR: Our Five Cores Master

The Translation Methods Core, led by Russell Rothman, M.D., and assisted by Shari Barkin, M.D., provides key support for common methodological issues that face translation researchers. Ayumi Shintani, Ph.D., Associate Professor in the Department of Biostatistics, leads the design and analytical consultation portion of our core and has had a focus in diabetes translation research since joining Vanderbilt over a decade ago.

The core will include robust support for translational research related to effective health communication (EHC). Led by Dr. Rothman, the EHC Program performs research in health communication in clinical settings and the community to promote improved patient and provider knowledge, behavior, clinical outcomes and quality. Health Communication is a broad field that includes health literacy, risk communication, medical decision making, patient centered communication, language and cultural communication issues, and other topics. The multidisciplinary program faculty includes nationally recognized physician-scientists, nurse-researchers, nutritionists, pharmacists, health and social psychologists and educational researchers.

Dr. Barkin leads our efforts to provide topic level expertise to multiple investigators who are exploring translation research involving children at high risk for developing diabetes. Specific areas where she provides expertise include a) effect of the parent/child dyad when designing interventions b) effect of social networks on childhood interventions c) measurement considerations in children (including actigraphy changes over time in both parents and children) d) regulatory issues including informed consent.
