Profile

Dr. Patel's research focuses on getting answers that matter to trauma victims, ICU survivors, and their health-care providers. He is an active member of the Critical Illness, Brain dysfunction, and Survivorship (CIBS) Center (www.icudelirium.org) and serves as its Fiscal Officer. His current research interests focus on brain dysfunction and critical illness, as related to traumatic brain injury (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), long-term cognitive impairment, dementia, and other aspects of ICU survivorship. The National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research & Quality (AHRQ), Eastern Association Surgery of Trauma (EAST) Foundation Research Scholarship, Vanderbilt CTSA, and the Vanderbilt Faculty Scholars Program have supported his research efforts. He is leading an NIH R01 for understanding the roles of Delirium and Traumatic Brain Injury on long-term Cognition and Return to Work after critical illness and injury (INSIGHT-ICU), as well as an NIH R01 defining the relationship between delirium and dementia among ICU survivors (BRAIN-ICU-2).
