My research is focused on the role of oxidative stress and inflammation in chronic kidney disease and their impact on muscle mitochondria in humans. Patients with chronic kidney disease suffer from frailty and sarcopenia, conditions that are associated with increased mortality in this population. Mitochondrial abnormalities in skeletal muscle may explain the frailty phenotype in patients with chronic kidney disease. We have been studying ultrastructure changes and mitochondrial function in skeletal muscle biopsies from patients with chronic kidney disease and healthy controls. We have been evaluated mitochondrial function in vivo using 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy.  We have also used in vitro and in vivo techniques to measure markers of mitochondrial function and mitochondrial content.
