Last active: 9/20/2017

Dr. Kabagambe is a cardiovascular epidemiologist and an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Epidemiology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. He is also an Associate Professor of Otolaryngology.

Research: His research focuses on the effects lifestyle and genetic risk factors on cardiovascular diseases and mortality. His main research focus is on how diet, particularly fatty acids and alcohol consumption, influences the risk for dyslipidemia, heart attacks, stroke and mortality from various causes. He is an author or co-author of more than 130 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on diet, food safety and on effects of genetic variation on response to diet and cardiovascular medications. His most recent work focuses on effects of trans fatty acids on mortality and on gender disparities in the effects of trans fatty acids on stroke incidence. Dr. Kabagambe is the PI of the Jackson Heart Study Vanguard Center at Vanderbilt University.

Teaching and mentoring: Dr. Kabagambe has mentored 10 masters’ students, 4 doctoral students, 1 post-doctoral fellow and has served on various dissertation committees. Dr. Kabagambe is an adviser for one Vanderbilt student currently enrolled in the PhD program in epidemiology. His students have attained faculty positions at major universities and others are practicing medicine, in medical residency programs or are currently enrolled in MD programs.

Service: Dr. Kabagambe is an active expert reviewer for various grant-making organizations including the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health. His is also an active reviewer for various scientific journals and professional meetings. His an associate editor or editorial board member of several journals including NMCD (Nutrition, Metabolism and Cardiovascular Diseases) and CNR (Current Nutrition Reports). At Vanderbilt, Dr. Kabagambe serves on the MPH program diversity committee, directs the Jackson Heart Study Vanguard Center and serves in the PhD in epidemiology program.
