Profile

Dr. Crofford is a native of Nashville, TN and a graduate of VanderbiltUniversity and the University of Tennessee Center for the Health Sciences.  She served her internship and residency in Internal Medicine at WashingtonUniversity’s BarnesHospital.  Following training in Internal Medicine, she pursed research and clinical fellowships in Molecular Genetics and Rheumatology at the National Institutes of Health.  She joined the faculty of the University of Michigan in 1993 as Assistant Professor and rose to the rank of Professor in 2004.  She relocated to the University of Kentucky in 2004 as Gloria W. Singletary Professor of Internal Medicine, Chief of the Division of Rheumatology, and Director of the Center for the Advancement of Women’s Health.  She moved to Vanderbilt University in 2013 as Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology & Immunology 

Dr. Crofford’s research is focused on understanding inflammation, pain, and stress as mediators of rheumatic diseases.  She is best known for her work to define the role of prostaglandins in inflammatory arthritis.  She has maintained active research support the National Institutes of Health, Arthritis Foundation, and industry sources throughout her career.  More than 150 journal articles and book chapters have been published as a result of her research. 

Dr. Crofford is a past president of the American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation.  She previously served on the American Board of Internal Medicine for Rheumatology.  Dr. Crofford served on the Advisory Council to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases of the National Institutes of Health.
