Our research is focused on Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling in development and cancer. We study how Shh protein distribution and signaling are regulated and how this regulation affects the identity and number of neural progenitors/stem cells in the central nervous system. We use stem cell cultures and mouse genetics to address these crucial questions, with emphasis on 1) neural stem cells/progenitors involved in the establishment of the brain circuitry and 2) tumor stem cells in the initiation and progression of pediatric tumors.
